"Much ado about nothing ??"

Bournonville's Chain of Beauty (photo prise probablement en 1998)

We try - this is a guess, I think I was actually at that performance, so there's no excuse, BUT for the two front lines of soloists ...
The man and woman on the far left - trou de mémoire.
The woman in pale blue, Henriette Muus, and behind her it seems, Johan Kobborg.
the woman in yellow looks to be Petrusjka Broholm, soloist, who now teaches in the School.
Behind Petruska, the very tall Mogens Bosen.
The woman in red on the far right looks to be Claire Still, soloist, a droll and piquant English dancer whose entire career has taken place in Denmark.
The man just behind Claire Still looks to be Victor Alvarez.

http://www.rohedswanlake.org.uk/

Citation: |
Madame Legat was getting me ready for a tough profession. You have to have incredible mental strength, resolve and a strong personality to survive all the drama and emotional rollercoaster of a career as a ballet dancer. (...)
Ultimately, Madame Legat taught me that ballet is about the mind.
Ballet is an illusion; so, if you can rely on your intelligence, you'll always find a way to make what needs to happen appear to happen. |

Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty is a lovely role and the second role I ever danced. I was 16 and on tour in Japan. When you're young, you can go for a whole day without feeling tired but this is a challenging role - a marathon - and getting through Act One is the most difficult. I enjoy it, though, because I like challenges and I love to bring something new to these ballets. People come expecting to see a certain thing so I like to try and make it as if they're seeing the ballet for the first time, even if they have seen it hundreds of times before. I love finding nuances, I love finding connections with the people on stage and falling in love with my Prince. I suppose it is silly - a kiss, she wakes, she falls in love, they get married - but I like to find the drama in these happy ballets. In the vision scene I try to find a sad note in the way Aurora is trapped in her deep sleep. I add all these little details - one may see them or one may not, but at least it gives me something to think about and I'm not just dancing. I will always go back to the music. If you really, really listen to the music it is all there. |

Effrayant : "After years of ballet my hips are crumbling"
Citation: |
When I was young, I didn't realise the need to protect my body in order to have a long career. Instead, I danced when I was feverish and when I was so badly injured that I was in searing pain.
My style of dancing has made it worse: I don't move like the great ballerinas of years ago. I am supremely athletic and have paid the price for that.
Ten years ago, an orthopaedic surgeon told me that my hips were only 50 per cent as good as they should be for someone my age and that I would probably need hip replacement operations.
(...) Every dancer will have a major injury every season. You would be amazed if you didn't.
(...) Kenneth Macmillan was doing his version of Romeo And Juliet and had offered me the lead role. It was such a great opportunity - especially as the director had said I wasn't right for it, but Kenneth had overruled him. I did not know if I would ever have the chance again. (...) I had six-monthly cortisone injections to help with the pain and I adapted my technique.
It got to the point where I couldn't get the heel of my affected foot on the ground to take off for jumps, so I danced with my foot rolled over. (Luckily, the distorted bone growth wasn't visible to the audience). And when I had to land, I changed the steps so I could land on the good foot. |
